Hong Kong Stock Exchange to Implement T+1 Settlement Cycle by Late 2028

The Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) has announced plans to transition to a T+1 settlement cycle for its stock cash market, aiming for completion in the second half of 2028. This decision follows a consultation process that garnered 109 unique responses from various market stakeholders, including brokers, custodians, investment managers, and technology providers.

The feedback from the consultation indicated broad support for the shift to T+1, with participants highlighting the potential benefits such as enhanced market efficiency, reduced settlement risks, and improved capital efficiency. Stakeholders believe that adopting this faster settlement cycle will bolster Hong Kong's position as a competitive international financial center.

The HKEX emphasized that the transition will proceed only if the market is adequately prepared and regulatory approval is secured. This move aligns with global trends towards quicker settlement processes in financial markets.
