Irish Gangs Utilize Private Vaults to Conceal Crypto Assets

Organized crime groups in Ireland are increasingly renting private vaults to store hardware wallets, seed phrases, and private keys associated with their cryptocurrency holdings, alongside cash and luxury items. This method, revealed by Ireland's Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB), allows criminals to keep their digital wealth out of law enforcement's reach while maintaining a layer of perceived anonymity.

CAB Chief Bureau Officer Michael Gubbins highlighted that while the use of private vaults is legal, investigators face challenges in linking the contents to criminal activities before securing forfeiture orders. This tactic creates a gap between visible on-chain assets and what can actually be seized, complicating the bureau's efforts to combat organized crime.

In a notable operation in March 2026, CAB accessed a locked wallet containing 500 BTC, valued at approximately €30 million, which was part of a larger seizure of 6,000 BTC from 2019. This successful recovery was supported by Europol, underscoring the cross-border nature of both organized crime and cryptocurrency asset recovery.

CAB is currently exploring new legislative measures to enhance its ability to seize and freeze crypto assets, as the existing legal framework is primarily designed for traditional forms of criminal wealth. The rise of digital assets secured in private vaults presents a significant challenge for investigators.
