Jameson Lopp Launches Dashboard Tracking Global Physical Attacks on Bitcoin Holders

Jameson Lopp, co-founder and Chief Security Officer of Casa, has introduced an interactive dashboard that documents 360 known physical attacks on Bitcoin and cryptocurrency holders worldwide. This tool transforms years of data from a community-curated GitHub repository into a visual representation of violence that has increasingly targeted individuals in the crypto space. In 2025, the frequency of these attacks averaged more than one incident per week, a trend that shows no signs of abating into 2026, with 23 documented incidents in just the first 11 weeks of the year.

The dashboard allows users to filter attacks by geography, time period, and severity, providing crucial information for those considering attending Bitcoin meetups or engaging in cryptocurrency transactions in specific areas. The data reveals that over half of the analyzed incidents are classified as “Serious,” which includes armed robbery, kidnapping, or physical assault resulting in significant injury. A recent fatal attack in Mexico highlights the severe risks associated with being a cryptocurrency holder.

France has emerged as a notable hotspot for these attacks, prompting local media coverage and safety advisories from crypto communities. The dashboard is designed to be community-maintained, encouraging contributions from individuals aware of unreported incidents, suggesting that the actual number of attacks may be higher than documented due to victims' reluctance to report incidents.

The rise in physical attacks has created a demand for new security services within the crypto ecosystem. Traditional cybersecurity measures focus on protecting digital assets from hackers, while wrench attacks target the individuals holding the keys. This shift has led to increased interest in custody solutions that prevent easy access to full Bitcoin balances under duress, including multi-signature setups and distributed key management, which are essential for enhancing security in a landscape marked by physical threats.
