Kakao Pay and Kakao Bank Collaborate with Fireblocks to Develop Digital Asset Infrastructure in South Korea

Kakao Pay and Kakao Bank, two prominent financial platforms in South Korea, have entered into a memorandum of understanding with Fireblocks, a leading provider of digital asset infrastructure. This partnership aims to establish a secure framework for digital assets, particularly focusing on stablecoin distribution within Kakao's extensive ecosystem, which serves approximately 43 million users in a country with a total population of around 51 million.

The agreement, announced on September 21, is non-binding and sets the stage for the three parties to evaluate distribution frameworks for digital assets while adhering to local regulatory and security standards. Fireblocks, which provides custody, transfer, and settlement services to over 2,500 institutions globally, including more than 100 banks, will play a crucial role in this initiative. The collaboration is expected to enhance the digital asset services available in South Korea.

Kakao Group has established a dedicated Stablecoin Task Force, co-headed by Shin Won-keun, CEO of Kakao Pay, and Yun Ho-young, CEO of Kakao Bank. Both executives have expressed optimism regarding the partnership with Fireblocks, highlighting the need for institutional-grade infrastructure in the region's banking and payment systems. This collaboration follows a previous agreement in July 2026 between Kakao and Circle, the issuer of USDC, which focused on blockchain-based payments and stablecoin development, indicating Kakao's strategic approach to building a comprehensive digital asset ecosystem.
