Kalshi Traders Predict Inflation Peak for 2026 Amid Persistent High Rates

Traders on the Kalshi prediction market are betting that inflation has reached its peak for 2026, but they do not expect a significant decline in rates anytime soon. Current pricing indicates a median Consumer Price Index (CPI) reading of approximately 3.6% year-over-year for December 2026, which remains well above the Federal Reserve's target of 2%.

The market's confidence is reflected in the odds, with over 90% probability that headline CPI will stay above 3.4% by year-end, and a 64% chance for readings above 3.5%. However, the likelihood of inflation exceeding 4.0% is estimated at 21%, suggesting that while a hot finish to the year is possible, it is not the primary expectation among traders.

Kalshi operates under the oversight of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission in the United States, providing a regulated environment for its contracts, which settle based on official CPI data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The current outlook contrasts sharply with earlier this year when inflation fears surged following a high April CPI print of 3.8%. Since then, easing energy prices have contributed to a moderation in inflation expectations, although persistent pressures from housing costs and services remain a concern.

The divergence between headline inflation and core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, is notable. While headline inflation is projected at 3.6%, core CPI expectations sit around 2.7%. This gap indicates that food and energy prices are still significant contributors to inflation, and the upcoming monthly CPI releases will be crucial in determining whether the current inflation outlook holds or requires adjustment.
