Major Expiry Approaches for Solana Options on Deribit
On September 25, approximately 65% of the open interest in Solana options on Deribit, a leading cryptocurrency options trading platform, is set to expire. This significant expiry coincides with a broader quarterly settlement window that also includes an estimated $15.9 billion in Bitcoin options and $2.1 billion in Ethereum options, marking it as one of the largest dates on the crypto options calendar.
The Solana options set to expire are clustered around key strike prices of $90, $105, and $125, which bracket the recent spot price range of Solana (SOL) between $115 and $118. The $125 strike is considered an out-of-the-money call target, while the $105 strike is closer to the current market price, and the $90 strike offers deeper downside protection for traders.
Despite the launch of Solana options in 2024 as part of Deribit's strategy to diversify its offerings, trading activity in these contracts remains modest compared to Bitcoin and Ethereum options. The liquidity for Solana options is notably thinner, with futures and perpetual swap markets on platforms like Binance and Bybit showing significantly higher daily volumes, indicating that price discovery for SOL is occurring primarily outside of Deribit.
