MetaMask Exits Ethereum Validators Following Security Incident

MetaMask has announced that it is exiting approximately 17,000 Ethereum validators as a precautionary measure after a security incident that occurred on September 30, 2026. The company confirmed on October 1 that there is no evidence to suggest that user wallets or funds were compromised during the breach, which affected its validator infrastructure tied to its staking product.

An on-chain researcher reported that an attacker diverted around 0.36 ETH in rewards from 18 of the 19 affected validators. In response, MetaMask is taking these validators offline, which collectively hold about 523,000 ETH. The process of exiting these validators is expected to be completed by October 7, 2026.

MetaMask reassured users that they do not need to take any action regarding their funds, as the staking setup is non-custodial. This means that MetaMask does not control the withdrawal keys for users' staked assets, thus limiting the impact of the breach. However, the company has advised users to remain vigilant against potential phishing attempts as the situation develops. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and details regarding how the breach occurred have yet to be disclosed.
