Nikita Bier publicly responds to reason for leaving X: hard to continue product development due to personal safety pressure

PANews reported on October 4 that former X (formerly Twitter) product lead Nikita Bier posted on X to respond to the reason for his departure. He said one of the most appealing parts of working at Elon Musk's company was that the team could quickly pivot based on the most important issues. X's organizational structure is flat and agile enough that job titles do not matter, and anyone can raise key issues and solve them personally, or rally the team to push forward together. This startup-style way of working is hard to achieve in large enterprises. He once said, "I was not hired to deal with spam, but a tsunami is coming, and I will drop everything to focus on solving this problem."

When responding to why he left, Nikita Bier said: "It's hard to continue product development when people are regularly showing up at your door trying to hurt you or your loved ones." He also said that as a publicly visible leader, bearing the pressure that comes with visibility is a necessary sacrifice, because it helps unite the team and build a product vision that members are willing to invest in.

According to earlier reports, Nikita Bier announced in August this year that he was stepping down as X product lead and transitioning to an advisory role. The position required round-the-clock commitment, and he now needed a rest. Going forward, Benji Taylor will be responsible for design, Singhai for core product engineering, and Dinkin Flicka for mobile engineering.

Nikita Bier said today that over the past year X set records in user growth and engagement, with its App Store ranking rising 70 places compared to last year. Over the past 400 days, X rebuilt major features including the timeline, Android app, onboarding, notifications, and chat, and launched nearly 30 new products.
