North Korean Hackers Steal $10.71 Million from Crypto Wallets in Global Campaign

A hacking operation linked to North Korea, known as WaterPlum, has compromised over 30,000 devices globally and stolen data from more than 7,000 cryptocurrency wallets, resulting in the siphoning of approximately 1.7 billion Japanese yen, or $10.71 million. This campaign, which spanned from December 2025 to July 2026, specifically targeted IT professionals and software developers by posing as tech recruiters offering job opportunities in artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

The hackers created fake profiles on social media and employment platforms, inviting victims to participate in fraudulent job interviews or complete coding tasks embedded with malware. The operation utilized a range of custom malware tools, including those named BeaverTail and InvisibleFerret, designed to extract sensitive information, particularly crypto wallet credentials and private keys.

On September 18, 2026, a coalition of law enforcement agencies, including Japan's National Police Agency and the FBI, formally attributed the WaterPlum campaign to the 313th Bureau of North Korea's Munitions Industry Department. This attribution highlights the connection between cybercrime and North Korea's weapons development efforts, as the 313th Bureau is known for its involvement in military infrastructure.

The extensive reach of the WaterPlum campaign indicates a broad strategy rather than focusing solely on high-value targets. The joint attribution by U.S. and Japanese authorities underscores the seriousness of the threat posed by North Korean cyber operations, which have previously included significant heists such as the $1.4 billion Bybit hack in 2025.
