OpenAI Employee Was Accused of Installing Hidden Voice Recorder to Capture Confidential Conversations

      • An OpenAI engineer was arrested over covert eavesdropping.
      • He is accused of espionage after an unauthorized voice recorder was found in the company’s conference room.
      • The employee faces up to five years in prison.

OpenAI employee Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi national, was arrested and charged with attempting to unlawfully intercept oral communications using an electronic device.

According to investigators, he installed a hidden audio recorder in an executive conference room in San Francisco, where confidential information about artificial intelligence technologies was discussed. The U.S. Department of Justice reported this.

Alfozan has already appeared in federal court. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release.

What Is Known about the Covert Devices and the Investigation

According to the charging documents, Alfozan worked as an engineer at OpenAI starting in July 2025. Around September 30, company employees discovered a covert audio recording device connected to a USB port on the back of a TV in one of the executive conference rooms. The device was concealed with toilet paper, and its contents were encrypted. Investigators say it was installed around September 28.

Surveillance footage allegedly captured Alfozan near the room on different days before the device was discovered, even though he was not authorized to attend or participate in the relevant meetings.

As a reminder, OpenAI is in talks to acquire Trail of Bits, and it also temporarily paused training new models after a series of incidents.

The complaint also states that before the incident, the employee used a work tool to look up the addresses of OpenAI buildings, the locations and calendars of meeting rooms, the whereabouts of executives, and information about meetings with external partners.

In addition, a chatbot account linked to his wife, which shared identifiers with Alfozan’s account, sent prompts about building a device for continuous audio recording, setting up Wi-Fi, remote listening, and encrypting a memory card. Investigators claim that some of the prompts referred to the specific device found in the office.

Note that OpenAI recently fired three researchers over the alleged transfer of confidential data.

On October 5, Alfozan allegedly entered a conference room and looked behind a TV where a recording device had been installed. That same day, OpenAI’s security team found another similar device in an employee’s unattended bag.

      Kash Patel, FBI Director, said:

“Protecting American SI innovation is essential to safeguarding our nation’s economic strength and national security.”

Note that U.S. President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order to usher in the era of “superintelligence.”

The Case Has Drawn Attention to AI Security

According to prosecutors, meetings at the facility covered closed-door technical, commercial, and strategic matters, including research, product development plans, technical progress, and engagement with government agencies.

U.S. Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton called the situation a reminder of the importance of protecting American technologies from foreign threats. The case is being investigated by the FBI, and the prosecution is being supported by prosecutors from the Northern District of California and a representative of the Justice Department unit for counterintelligence and export control.

The incident comes amid broader scrutiny of protecting technological infrastructure. Earlier, OpenAI, in cooperation with Anthropic, began preparations for a potential AI catastrophe and its consequences.
