OpenAI forms independent mathematics advisory group, says internal model has solved over 100 open problems

PANews reported on September 22 that OpenAI announced it is working with mathematicians to establish a "Mathematics and AI Advisory Group," hosted by the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. OpenAI said that its new internal model, which began training on August 28, has solved more than 100 long-standing open problems across most areas of mathematics, in addition to the Navier–Stokes Millennium Problem. The advisory group's first cohort consists of nine mathematicians, including Timothy Gowers, Martin Hairer and Edward Witten, who will help assess the significance of new results, coordinate release arrangements, and provide advice on academic and professional norms in mathematical research. The organization is independent of OpenAI; members do not accept compensation from OpenAI and may publicly release recommendations, but it does not hold decision-making authority at OpenAI and is not responsible for advising on the pace of its internal mathematical research.
