Plattsburgh, New York Considers Moratorium on Cryptocurrency Mining and AI Data Centers

The town of Plattsburgh, New York, is contemplating a temporary moratorium on high energy consumption computing facilities, including cryptocurrency mining and artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. A public hearing was held to discuss the proposal, which aims to pause the approval of operational applications that consume 300 kilowatts or more for a duration of 12 months. As of now, the mayor has not yet made a decision on the moratorium, and the city council is scheduled to reconvene on September 17 to further deliberate the matter.

Plattsburgh has a history of regulating cryptocurrency activities, having previously enacted an 18-month ban on Bitcoin mining in 2018 due to concerns from residents regarding rising electricity costs. The current discussions come amid a backdrop of increasing mining difficulty, escalating electricity prices, and declining token values, which have led many cryptocurrency mining companies to pivot towards AI and high-performance computing. This shift has prompted local governments to reassess their regulations on facilities that consume significant energy resources.
