Poland Moves to Draft New Crypto Legislation After Presidential Veto

Poland's parliament is set to draft a new cryptocurrency bill following the failure to override President Karol Nawrocki's veto of previous legislation aimed at regulating the crypto market. The Sejm, Poland's lower house, voted 241 to 198 against overturning the veto, falling short of the three-fifths majority needed. The Polish People’s Party lawmaker Krzysztof Paszyk confirmed that the Finance Ministry is currently working on a new draft, with further details expected soon.

The vetoed legislation was intended to align Poland's regulatory framework with the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). This move comes in the wake of the Zondacrypto scandal, which has raised significant concerns about consumer protection in the crypto sector. Zondacrypto, once Poland's largest crypto exchange, faced severe operational issues leading to customer losses estimated at over $95 million, prompting calls for stricter oversight.

Nawrocki has expressed support for regulating the crypto sector but criticized the government for not incorporating his office's proposals into the legislation. The political landscape surrounding crypto regulation in Poland has become increasingly contentious, with accusations of political financing linked to the Zondacrypto case complicating the situation further. The ongoing debate highlights the challenges Poland faces as it seeks to establish a regulatory framework for the rapidly evolving cryptocurrency market.
