Robinhood CEO Defends Tokenized Stocks Amid AMC CEO's Criticism

Vlad Tenev, CEO of Robinhood, has defended the company's tokenized stock products in light of criticism from AMC Entertainment's CEO, Adam Aron. During a CNBC interview on September 9, 2026, Tenev stated that once a stock is publicly traded, companies lose control over how their shares are referenced in financial products. Robinhood's tokenized stocks are structured as debt securities and are designed to track the price and dividends of U.S.-listed shares on a 1:1 basis. This allows non-U.S. investors to gain economic exposure to American equities without actually owning the underlying stock. However, Tenev emphasized that token holders do not have voting rights, distinguishing them from traditional shareholders. Currently, these products are not available to U.S. investors as Robinhood awaits regulatory clarity.

Aron has criticized Robinhood's tokenized products, labeling them a "fake market" that undermines the relationship between companies and their actual investors. He has threatened to involve the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the matter, highlighting the unsettled regulatory landscape surrounding tokenized securities. Tenev has expressed a desire for U.S. regulators to establish a formal framework for tokenized stocks, citing potential benefits such as reduced settlement risk and expanded market access.
