Russia Registers First Cryptocurrency Exchanges and Custodians

Russia has officially registered its first batch of cryptocurrency exchange operators and digital asset custodians following the implementation of new regulations on September 1. The Bank of Russia announced the authorization of four exchange operators and five custodians, marking a significant step in the country's approach to digital assets.

Among the registered custodians is Sberbank, Russia's largest bank, which has confirmed its plans to launch cryptocurrency products on December 1. Sberbank will offer services through its SberBank Online, SberInvestments, and SberBusiness platforms, initially supporting Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), and USDt (USDT). Other custodians include Atomyze, Voltari, and Cloud Infrastructure.

The list of exchange operators features T-Invest Lab, Zefir, and Sistema-Crypto, with VTB Bank also appearing on both the exchange and custodian lists. This registration process is part of a broader regulatory framework established by a cryptocurrency bill signed by President Vladimir Putin in August, which places exchanges, custodians, brokers, and investors under the supervision of the Bank of Russia while maintaining a prohibition on using cryptocurrencies for payments.
