End of Abstract: Igloo Is Winding Down Its Blockchain and Shifting Its Focus Back to Pudgy Penguins

      • Igloo will shut down the Abstract blockchain after nearly three years of operation due to high operating costs, low liquidity, and a limited DeFi ecosystem.
      • The company cited high operating costs, low liquidity, and a limited DeFi ecosystem as the reasons behind the decision.
      • The company plans to consolidate staff and resources around Pudgy Penguins, Pudgy Penguins NFT, and the PENGU token.

Igloo, the company behind the Pudgy Penguins brand, announced it is winding down the Abstract blockchain. The network will cease operations on December 15, 2026, and the company will focus staff and resources on developing Pudgy Penguins, Pudgy Penguins NFT, and the PENGU token.

According to Igloo, over the past two years the company has spent tens of millions of dollars to support and develop Abstract, trying to find product-market fit and reach profitability.

Igloo noted that Abstract’s growth was constrained by high operating costs to maintain a standalone blockchain, low liquidity, a limited DeFi ecosystem, and waning market interest in the network.

The company also pointed to limited interest from institutional players and a smaller budget compared with competitors. In Igloo’s view, maintaining a blockchain focused exclusively on the consumer crypto sector ultimately proved to be an unsustainable standalone business model.

At the same time, the company emphasized that Abstract has shown significant growth over the past 18 months. In particular, The Portal became a platform for discovering and distributing onchain products, while Abstract Global Wallet (AGW) made it easier for users to interact with onchain apps.

More than 144 unique apps were deployed on Abstract. According to the company, more than 400,000 users also joined the network, and brands and IP such as Red Bull Racing and Disney used Abstract to engage audiences through onchain experiences.

Even so, over the past 12 months the team was unable to find a sustainable model to scale the network. As a result, Igloo decided that continued funding for Abstract was diverting resources away from Pudgy Penguins.

What will happen to users’ assets?

Abstract users can already begin withdrawing assets via the Migration Center at migrate.abs.xyz or the native bridge at native-bridge.abs.xyz. When using the native bridge, delays of up to three hours are possible.

Funds must be moved off the network by December 15, 2026. After that date, any assets remaining on Abstract will become inaccessible.

Abstract’s engineering and ecosystem teams will also help projects deployed on the network migrate to other blockchains.

Igloo urged users to watch out for fraudulent migration websites and messages from scammers. To withdraw assets, the company recommends using only official links and verifying information via Discord and other official channels.

      Focus on Pudgy Penguins

After winding down Abstract, Igloo plans to fully focus on Pudgy Penguins. The company considers the brand one of the most recognizable in the crypto industry and one of the fastest-growing character IPs.

The Pudgy Penguins ecosystem spans physical products and retail, the PENGU token, and Pudgy Penguins NFTs. Igloo plans to develop this ecosystem as a single user acquisition funnel — from products and content to community participation via PENGU, and deeper engagement through NFTs.

The company called the wind-down of Abstract the beginning of a new chapter for Igloo and Pudgy Penguins.

As a reminder, earlier the team behind the Blast L2 network announced it was shutting down the project due to economic unviability.
