Russia approves first crypto exchanges and custodians, Sberbank plans to launch crypto products in December

PANews reported on October 7, citing Cointelegraph, that Russia's central bank announced it has registered the first batch of cryptocurrency exchange operators and digital asset custodians under the new crypto regulatory rules that took effect on September 1, including Sberbank, Russia's largest bank. The first list includes 4 exchange operators and 5 custodians, with VTB appearing on both lists.

Sberbank said it has applied for digital asset custodian status and plans to launch its first crypto products on December 1, initially supporting Bitcoin, Ethereum and USDT, with services offered through platforms such as SberBank Online, SberInvestments and SberBusiness.

The registration comes after Russian President Putin signed a crypto regulatory bill in August, which establishes a regulatory framework covering trading platforms, custodians, brokers and investors, with the central bank responsible for oversight, while continuing to prohibit the use of cryptocurrencies for payments for goods and services.
