Solana Liquidity Declines Over 28% in 2026 Amid Market Changes
A recent report from CoinGecko Research reveals that the liquidity of Solana's native token, SOL, has decreased significantly, with median market depth falling from approximately $28 million per side in 2025 to around $20 million per side in 2026. This represents a decline of over 28.5%, indicating a tightening of trading conditions for a network that emphasizes speed and scalability.
The study, which analyzed data from eight centralized exchanges between July 6 and September 3, 2026, found that while overall liquidity has diminished, it has become more evenly distributed across exchanges. MEXC emerged as the leader in immediate market depth for SOL, with about $934,000 available, surpassing competitors such as Binance and Coinbase. However, Bitget and Coinbase displayed stronger depth further out in the order book, beyond ±$0.20 from the current price.
The report also highlighted that during periods of market volatility, the depth on many platforms dropped significantly, sometimes to the range of $3 million to $4 million. This shallow liquidity can lead to increased price volatility, as larger orders are more likely to impact SOL's price. Despite the challenges, Solana briefly surpassed $100 on August 25, attributed to notable inflows from exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
In contrast to Solana's liquidity decline, Bitcoin experienced a nearly 50% increase in market depth during the same period, while Ethereum also faced similar challenges with thinner relative depth. The findings suggest that traders may need to adopt more conservative strategies in light of the reduced liquidity in the Solana ecosystem.
