Europol Warns Crypto Wallets Vulnerable to Future Quantum Attacks

Europol has issued a warning to the cryptocurrency industry regarding the potential vulnerabilities of crypto wallets in light of advancing quantum computing technology. On October 7, 2026, the European Union's law enforcement agency released two reports through its European Cybercrime Centre (EC3), highlighting that crypto wallets could become prime targets if quantum computers develop the capability to execute practical attacks.

The reports emphasize the need for the industry to transition to quantum-resistant cryptography proactively. Current cryptographic methods rely on the assumption that it is computationally infeasible to derive private keys from public keys. However, Europol cautions that advanced quantum computers could utilize algorithms like Shor's to reverse-engineer these keys, potentially allowing unauthorized transactions.

Additionally, Europol introduced the concept of 'harvest now, decrypt later' (HNDL), where malicious actors could collect encrypted data today and wait for future quantum technology to decrypt it. This poses a significant risk for cryptocurrencies, as information on blockchains is permanent and could be exploited once quantum capabilities are realized. Approximately 6.9 million Bitcoin, valued at around $586 billion, are currently held in legacy addresses that may be vulnerable to such attacks.

The urgency of this transition is echoed by the Joint Committee of European Supervisory Authorities, which issued a similar alert in September 2026. The European Commission has also mandated that member states begin implementing post-quantum security measures by the end of 2026. Europol's recommendations call for a systematic approach to adopting quantum-resistant cryptography, improved wallet security, and enhanced key management practices to safeguard against these emerging threats.
