Starknet Introduces Programmable Privacy Features for Digital Assets
Starknet has launched new privacy features that enable programmable private money, enhancing the confidentiality of digital cash similar to Zcash. This initiative includes the STRK20 framework, which is now operational on Starknet, an Ethereum layer 2 network, and the Ztarknet project, which is still under development and aims to integrate Starknet's execution engine with Zcash as its own layer 2 solution.
The STRK20 framework allows for token-level privacy, applicable to ERC-20-like assets. It ensures that transaction details such as sender, receiver, and amounts can remain confidential. This framework supports decentralized finance (DeFi) activities, including swaps, lending, and staking, while maintaining privacy. It incorporates compliance features like viewing keys, which allow authorized parties to access transaction details, and selective disclosure, enabling users to share specific information without revealing everything to the network.
The Ztarknet project, which is designed to utilize Zcash's native token (ZEC) for settlement fees, is progressing from its testnet phase, which launched in November 2025. The recent Starknet v0.14.2 upgrade in April 2026 facilitated the activation of STRK20 by June 2026. The ongoing development of Ztarknet is expected to enhance privacy in cryptocurrency transactions, potentially attracting institutional interest as global privacy regulations become stricter.
