Stablecoin Payments Surge 45% to $482 Billion in 2026

Stablecoin payment volumes reached $482 billion from January to September 2026, marking a 45% increase compared to the previous year, according to a report by Allium. Despite this surge in payment activity, the total supply of stablecoins saw only a slight increase of 0.4%, reaching $305 billion by the end of September. The report highlights that September alone set a record with $72 billion in stablecoin payments, contributing to a 51% growth in the third quarter compared to the same period last year.

The number of transactions also saw significant growth, with payments rising 71% to 1.04 billion transactions in the first nine months of 2026. Interestingly, the average payment size decreased from $544 to $462, indicating a shift towards smaller transactions. Major use cases for stablecoin payments included business transactions, payroll, and cross-border payments, with businesses emerging as the primary beneficiaries.

Card networks such as Visa and Mastercard have played a crucial role in this growth. Visa has introduced over 160 stablecoin-linked card programs globally, with payment volumes on these programs increasing nearly 200% year over year. Meanwhile, Mastercard has expanded its capabilities through the acquisition of BVNK, enhancing its control over stablecoin payment infrastructure. Stablecoin-funded card spending surged to $3.9 billion in the third quarter, reflecting the growing integration of stablecoins into everyday transactions.

The competitive landscape for stablecoin issuers is evolving, as major players like Tether, Circle, and Ethena experienced a contraction in supply during 2026. In contrast, smaller issuers collectively added $6.9 billion in supply, suggesting a shift towards a more fragmented market. Observers will be watching to see if the trend of decreasing average payment sizes continues and whether smaller issuers can maintain their growth in the face of competition from larger entities.
