Thai Police Arrest Chinese National Linked to $75 Million Crime Network

Thai immigration police have apprehended a 37-year-old Chinese national, identified as Mr. Wu, in Bangkok's Saphan Sung district. The arrest occurred on October 16, 2026, after authorities linked him to a transnational criminal network involved in loan-sharking, money laundering, and operating mule accounts. Wu had reportedly evaded capture for over three years and was wanted in China on similar charges.

Authorities allege that Wu managed more than 133 bank accounts used to facilitate significant financial transactions, totaling approximately 500 million yuan, or about $70 to $75 million. These accounts were reportedly utilized for cryptocurrency and foreign currency exchanges, aiding criminal enterprises in moving money across borders. Wu's formal charge in Thailand is overstaying his visa, as his visa lapsed in late 2022 or early 2023.

The arrest is part of a broader crackdown by Thai authorities on Chinese-linked crime networks, which has intensified in October 2026. This initiative aims to target groups involved in illegal property holdings and online scams. Earlier in the month, police conducted major raids that resulted in asset seizures worth hundreds of millions of baht and the arrest of additional suspects linked to fraud-related offenses. Thai authorities plan to deport Wu back to China, where he will face the outstanding warrant against him.
