Michael Saylor Criticizes MSCI's Potential Exclusion of MSTR from Index

Michael Saylor, founder of Bitcoin Strategy Company, expressed his views on the potential exclusion of MSTR from MSCI's new index rules during a recent interview with Bloomberg. He emphasized that while the exclusion is not critical for the company's strategy due to the relatively small scale of funds they manage, he is disappointed with MSCI's current position. Saylor argued that the treatment of Bitcoin as a non-capital asset reflects a bias against digital currencies, which he believes sets a negative precedent for the industry.

Saylor highlighted that traditional assets such as oil, natural gas, land, and machinery are recognized as capital, while Bitcoin is not, indicating a value judgment that he finds problematic. He criticized MSCI for potentially distancing itself from the future of digital assets, asserting that investors, including those in the United States, are unlikely to support such a move. He urged MSCI to reconsider its proposal, suggesting that reversing the decision would benefit the broader digital asset industry.

In addressing the debate over whether Bitcoin Strategy Company qualifies as an operating business, Saylor drew parallels with banks and insurance companies. He contended that just as these institutions provide credit and policies, his company supports digital credit products backed by Bitcoin, positioning it as a legitimate operating enterprise within the financial sector.
