Ethereum Prepares Glamsterdam Upgrade Ahead of Its Launch on Hoodi Network

      • Ethereum has scheduled the Glamsterdam launch on Hoodi for October 26.
      • The blockchain will raise the gas limit to 200 million.
      • The mainnet launch date is still unknown.

The Ethereum Foundation announced that the Glamsterdam upgrade will be activated on the Hoodi testnet on October 26, 2026. It is expected to increase the throughput of the blockchain’s base layer (L1), optimize block validation, and change gas fee accounting mechanisms. The activation date for the upgrade on the Ethereum mainnet has not yet been determined.

What Glamsterdam Will Change on the Ethereum Network

The Glamsterdam upgrade combines changes from the Amsterdam execution layer and the Gloas consensus layer. Its key components are protocol-level separation of block building and proposing (ePBS) and block-level data access lists (BAL).

The ePBS mechanism, proposed in EIP-7732, separates the roles of validators who propose blocks and participants who build them. The protocol will coordinate interaction and payments between them, reducing reliance on trusted intermediaries. The change will also give validators more time to verify transaction execution.

BAL access lists, described in EIP-7928, will record the accounts and storage accessed during block processing, as well as state changes after transactions. This will allow clients to read data in parallel, verify transactions, and compute state roots more efficiently.

Glamsterdam will also change gas calculation rules to more accurately account for resource usage and blockchain state growth. In particular, EIP-8037 increases and separately accounts for the cost of state creation, while EIP-8038 updates the costs of accessing it.

Other planned changes include Ethereum transfer logs, a new opcode for retrieving the slot number, an increase in the maximum size of smart contracts, and changes to validator operating rules.

When the Upgrade Will Be Activated and What Operators Need to Do

According to the Ethereum Foundation, Glamsterdam will go live on Hoodi on October 26 — at epoch 132,352 and slot 4,235,264. At the same time, the network gas limit will be increased to 200 million, as was already done on the Sepolia testnet during the upgrade activation on October 6.

Notably, during earlier testing of Glamsterdam on Sepolia, developers identified a vulnerability in the block auction system that allows attackers to outbid legitimate bids and then fail to propagate transactions after winning.

Hoodi node operators and validators need to update their execution and consensus layer clients to compatible versions before the launch. Validators also need to review the requirements for the new block production process and the compatibility of the tools they use.

Application developers are advised to test smart contracts on the updated Sepolia and Hoodi networks and check whether the new gas accounting rules affect their projects. Contracts that rely on fixed gas limits or assumptions about remaining gas may require changes.

The Glamsterdam upgrade for the Ethereum mainnet will be announced separately. Mainnet users and asset holders do not need to do anything at this time in connection with the Hoodi launch.

As a reminder, in August, the Ethereum team launched the Platåberget testnet to test the Glamsterdam upgrade.
