El Salvador's Bitcoin Reserve Surpasses 7,800 Coins Amid IMF Restrictions

As of October 16, 2026, El Salvador's national Bitcoin reserve has exceeded 7,800 coins, reaching a total of 7,807 BTC, valued at approximately $640 to $650 million based on current trading prices around $82,000 per Bitcoin. This accumulation occurs despite a $1.4 billion loan agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which imposes restrictions on public sector Bitcoin purchases.

The growth of El Salvador's Bitcoin reserve can be traced back to a policy initiated in September 2021, where the government committed to acquiring one Bitcoin per day. Since the start of the IMF program in early 2025, the reserve has increased by over 1,700 BTC, rising from around 6,070 BTC at that time. El Salvador's National Bitcoin Office maintains transparency by publishing the wallet addresses that hold the reserve, distinguishing it from other governments that may not disclose their Bitcoin holdings.

The IMF's agreement with El Salvador included conditions such as the cessation of Bitcoin's legal-tender status, which the government complied with. However, the IMF has indicated that the recent growth in the reserve is attributed to private donations rather than government purchases. This arrangement allows El Salvador to continue accumulating Bitcoin while adhering to the IMF's stipulations, although it raises questions about the sustainability of this strategy in the long term.
