Joint Operation in West Africa Targets Cryptocurrency Fraud, Arrests 28 Individuals

The U.S. Department of Justice has announced a significant enforcement action against a scam network operating in West Africa, resulting in the arrest of 28 individuals in Ghana and Nigeria. This operation, which is the first of its kind focused on the region, aimed to combat cryptocurrency investment fraud that has targeted citizens in the United States, the United Kingdom, and other countries.

The operation, coordinated by the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA), also revealed a disturbing link to human trafficking, with 117 victims identified in Ghana awaiting repatriation to Nigeria. Private sector partners, including cryptocurrency exchanges Coinbase and Binance, along with blockchain analysis firms such as Chainalysis, Elliptic, and TRM Labs, played a crucial role in identifying over $11 million in funds that could potentially be frozen as part of the investigation.

Coinbase reported its involvement in tracking illegal funds, which led to the identification of over 65 active scam victims and the prevention of more than $415,000 in potential losses. Meanwhile, TRM Labs uncovered a large-scale peer-to-peer money laundering network. In the Sasaabi region of Ghana, authorities seized 303 electronic devices during the operation, while additional arrests were made in Nigeria. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, also contributed by deleting over 3.7 million accounts and pages linked to these scams, primarily targeting individuals in the U.S. and the U.K.
