UK Banks Face More Than 10,000 Crypto Transfer Complaints…
Major UK banks are facing renewed criticism over restrictions on cryptocurrency payments after an industry advocacy campaign recorded more than 10,000 customer complaint submissions in three months. According to findings released by Stand With Crypto UK on October 20, 2026, 9,803 individuals submitted 10,092 complaints through the organization's online campaign tool between May and August. The submissions concerned blocked, limited or otherwise restricted transfers from bank accounts to cryptocurrency platforms, including businesses registered with the Financial Conduct Authority. The figures highlight tensions between banks' fraud-prevention responsibilities and customers seeking access to digital assets. However, the total represents submissions collected through an advocacy campaign, rather than independently verified complaints received by banks or the FCA. It also does not establish how many individual cryptocurrency transfers were rejected. The findings follow a campaign launched in June urging customers to challenge restrictions that Stand With Crypto considers disproportionate.
Lloyds, Barclays and NatWest Lead Complaint Figures
Lloyds Banking Group accounted for 2,297 submissions, the highest number among the institutions identified. Barclays followed with 1,569, while NatWest Group received 1,278. Together, the three banking groups represented 5,144 submissions, approximately 51% of the reported total. The campaign identified different approaches to cryptocurrency payments across the UK banking sector. Barclays and HSBC UK were reported to impose limits of £2,500 per transaction and £10,000 over a rolling 30-day period.Six banks, including Starling Bank, TSB and Chase UK, were categorized by the campaign as imposing blanket restrictions on certain cryptocurrency transfers. Meanwhile, Lloyds and Revolut were classified as having no publicly announced blanket transfer limits, despite attracting customer complaints. Revolut indicated that some unsuccessful transfers could reflect technical limitations involving unsupported cryptocurrency platforms rather than an explicit banking prohibition. These distinctions demonstrate that customer difficulties can arise from transaction limits, platform-specific restrictions, fraud checks or operational issues. The complaint submissions also covered all 650 UK parliamentary constituencies, according to the campaign, indicating geographically widespread participation. Nevertheless, without customer-base figures or transaction volumes for each bank, the submissions cannot establish which institution has the highest rate of disputed payments.Banking Access Remains a Challenge Ahead of 2027 Regulation
The dispute comes as Britain prepares to introduce a broader regulatory framework for cryptocurrency businesses in October 2027. Under the planned regime, firms conducting regulated cryptoasset activities will generally require FCA authorization. Industry representatives argue that regulatory approval could offer limited commercial benefits if authorized businesses continue facing restrictions on banking access. In a recent response to the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Crypto and Digital Assets, UK Finance defended banks' ability to make individual risk-based decisions. The banking industry association said payment restrictions are intended to address fraud, scams and consumer harm rather than prevent legitimate cryptocurrency participation. It also called for clearer regulatory responsibilities and stronger safeguards across the digital asset ecosystem. The government has acknowledged banking-access difficulties affecting cryptocurrency firms and stated that authorized businesses should not face restrictions solely because they operate in the sector. However, FCA registration or authorization does not guarantee unrestricted bank transfers or eliminate institutions' financial crime obligations. For customers, the controversy raises questions about transparency, consistency and the ability to challenge payment decisions. For cryptocurrency businesses, it highlights the importance of reliable access to conventional banking infrastructure. The campaign's findings add pressure for clearer policies, but do not establish that the restrictions are unlawful or that regulators have ordered banks to remove them.Source: FinanceFeeds
