x402 Stablecoin Payment Protocol Sees Significant Growth in Active Users

The x402 stablecoin payment protocol has experienced a remarkable increase in its user base, with a 152% rise in monthly active senders, reaching 43,100 as of mid-October 2026. This surge is largely attributed to the performance of Base, Coinbase's layer-2 network, which accounts for approximately 32,000 of these active senders. The protocol, launched in May 2025, is designed primarily for software applications, particularly AI agents that require seamless payment capabilities for data and services without human intervention.

In the past 30 days, x402 facilitated 75.41 million transactions, resulting in a settled volume of $24.24 million. Most transactions are micropayments, typically ranging from $0.0001 to $0.10. The broader ecosystem now includes around 94,060 buyers and 22,000 sellers, indicating a growing marketplace that extends beyond the active sender metric.

x402 operates by utilizing the HTTP status code '402', which indicates that payment is required. This allows clients to make payments in stablecoins, primarily USDC, directly within the standard HTTP request flow, eliminating the need for accounts or API keys. The protocol supports payments across EVM-compatible chains and Solana, making it easier for machines to transact without traditional barriers. Major companies such as Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google, and AWS have shown support for the protocol, highlighting its potential to facilitate an 'agent economy' where autonomous software can routinely make payments for services.
