MSCI's New Index Rules Threaten Strategy's Inclusion Starting November 30

MSCI has announced significant changes to its index eligibility criteria, which will take effect on November 30, 2026. These new rules specifically target non-operating companies, putting Michael Saylor's Bitcoin treasury company, Strategy, at risk of removal from MSCI's Global Investable Market Indexes. If removed, JPMorgan estimates that approximately $2.8 billion in passive selling pressure could impact Strategy's stock, as funds tracking MSCI benchmarks currently hold nearly 3.1% of its shares.

The overhaul, revealed on October 15, 2026, involves a two-stage process. Initially, companies will be screened for substantial operating assets. Those that pass will then undergo a five-ratio financial test to distinguish between active businesses and passive holding entities. Firms classified as non-operating will be deemed ineligible for inclusion in the indexes. MSCI's decision follows a consultation period that concluded on September 30, 2026, and the final list of affected companies will be published on November 11, 2026.

Preliminary data from May 2026 indicated that Strategy, along with Japan's Metaplanet and Yellow Cake, which holds physical uranium, could be impacted by these changes. Existing members like Strategy benefit from buffer protections, meaning a company must fail the eligibility criteria in two consecutive reviews before removal is enforced. Saylor has publicly downplayed the potential impact of these changes, suggesting that index classifications should reflect market realities rather than dictate corporate operations.
