Zcash Surges 20%, Leading to $212 Million in Crypto Liquidations
Zcash experienced a significant price surge of approximately 20% on September 4, reaching an intraday high between $1,023 and $1,051, marking its highest trading level in nearly a decade. This price increase triggered a wave of short liquidations, contributing to a total of about $212 million in liquidations across the cryptocurrency market, with Zcash shorts accounting for between $34.5 million and $44 million of that total.
The surge in Zcash's price coincided with the launch of Grayscale's ZCSH spot ETF on August 25, which quickly attracted over $400 million in assets under management. The influx of institutional investment created sustained buying pressure in the spot market, leading to the liquidation of leveraged short positions that had built up following a critical vulnerability disclosed in May 2026. This vulnerability had previously caused traders to adopt a bearish stance on Zcash, resulting in a heavily concentrated short position.
Despite the recent price rally, the $2 billion in open interest on Zcash futures indicates potential fragility in the market. A sharp price reversal could lead to further liquidation cascades. Traders are advised to monitor ETF inflow rates and the composition of open interest, as these factors could significantly influence future price movements.
