Atlanta Fed GDPNow Lowers Q3 Growth Estimate to 3.6%

The Atlanta Federal Reserve's GDPNow model has revised its estimate for real GDP growth in the third quarter of 2026 to 3.6 percent, down from a previous estimate of 3.7 percent. This adjustment comes following the release of wholesale inventories data from the U.S. Census Bureau, which indicated a decrease in the contribution of inventory investment to GDP growth, from 2.07 percentage points to 1.98 percentage points.

The GDPNow tracker provides a running estimate of U.S. economic growth ahead of the official quarterly GDP release. It measures inflation-adjusted growth from the previous quarter at a seasonally adjusted annualized rate. The model synthesizes forecasts for 13 GDP components and updates as new data on consumer spending, construction, manufacturing, trade, and inventories becomes available.

It is important to note that GDPNow is not an official forecast from the Atlanta Fed or the Federal Reserve. The model operates mechanically, without subjective adjustments, meaning that revisions do not reflect changes in policymakers' views or interest-rate intentions. Early estimates can fluctuate significantly as much of the quarter's data remains incomplete, and variations in trade and inventory levels can lead to substantial changes in the growth estimate.
