Australia's August CPI Expected to Show Inflation Rise Following RBA Rate Hike

Australia is set to release its consumer price index (CPI) data for August on September 30, 2026, at 01:30 GMT, which corresponds to 21:30 US Eastern time on September 29. This report follows the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) decision to increase its cash rate by 25 basis points on September 29, a move aimed at addressing inflationary pressures in the economy.

Forecasts indicate that the annual headline CPI is expected to rise to 4.0%, up from 3.5% in the previous reading. Monthly inflation is projected to increase by 0.4%, a decrease from the 1.0% recorded earlier. The trimmed mean measure, which excludes extreme price movements and is closely monitored by policymakers, is anticipated to remain steady at 3.6% year-on-year, with a monthly increase of 0.3%.

The upcoming CPI data will be crucial for market participants, as it may influence the RBA's future monetary policy decisions. A result that meets or exceeds expectations, particularly in the trimmed mean category, could bolster arguments for further tightening. Conversely, a weaker outcome might lead to doubts about the necessity for additional rate hikes. Investors will be closely watching the RBA's subsequent communications and future data releases to assess the trajectory of monetary policy.
