Bank of England Deputy Governor Warns of Potential Rate Hike Due to Energy Prices

Bank of England (BoE) Deputy Governor Ben Ramsden has expressed concerns regarding the impact of persistently high energy prices on inflation, suggesting that this could lead to a future increase in interest rates. The BoE recently maintained its Bank Rate at 3.75% following a 6-3 vote, with three members advocating for a 25 basis points hike. Ramsden highlighted the significant rise in energy prices, exacerbated by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, which could push inflation to approximately 3.75% in the fourth quarter of 2026 and slightly above 4% in the first quarter of 2027 if current trends continue.

Ramsden is closely monitoring the effects of elevated energy prices on domestic factors such as food prices and wage settlements, which could indicate whether the initial energy shock is becoming entrenched in the economy. While he noted that there is currently little evidence of substantial second-round effects, he acknowledged that the longer high energy prices persist, the greater the risk of these effects manifesting. Despite his generally dovish stance, Ramsden indicated that if inflationary pressures continue to rise, there may be a case for increasing the Bank Rate.

Market analysts are currently pricing in an 85% probability of a rate hike at the BoE's next meeting, reflecting the growing concern over inflation risks. The central bank's future decisions will likely depend on the trajectory of energy prices and the geopolitical situation in the Middle East, as a significant easing in tensions could alleviate some of the pressure on monetary policy.
