BofA Reports Decline in Active Fund Performance Amid Megacap Dominance

In September 2026, only 44% of large-cap active funds managed to outperform their benchmarks, as reported by Bank of America (BofA). This decline in performance comes as market leadership has increasingly concentrated around megacap stocks, which have significantly influenced overall market trends.

The cap-weighted S&P 500 index outperformed its equal-weight counterpart by nearly 5 percentage points during the same period. Growth managers faced particular challenges, with major contributions to the Russell 1000 Growth index's monthly gains coming from just two companies: Meta Platforms and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), which together accounted for 70% of the index's increase.
