Gold Prices Remain Rangebound Amid US-Iran Stalemate and Economic Data Risks

Gold prices have shown limited movement recently, briefly dipping below last week's lows before recovering as oil prices and U.S. Treasury yields fell. The ongoing developments between the United States and Iran, coupled with shifts in Federal Reserve interest rate expectations, have been significant factors influencing the gold market. Although tensions in the Middle East have eased since the recent United Nations General Assembly, incidents such as strikes on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz continue as Iran maintains its blockade.

Federal Reserve officials, including John Williams and Philip Jefferson, have dampened expectations for an interest rate hike in October, especially following a weaker-than-expected U.S. non-farm payroll report, which has reduced the likelihood of a rate increase to 21%. This dovish sentiment has provided some support for gold, although upcoming U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) data and the status of U.S.-Iran negotiations could limit further gains in the short term. A softer CPI report could bolster gold prices, while a stronger report, especially amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, might push prices lower.

Market analysts suggest that gold is currently consolidating near its lows, with potential for a pullback towards key trendlines. Traders are closely monitoring price levels, with sellers likely to target a drop to around 3,885, while buyers are looking for a breakout that could lead to a rally towards 4,700. Upcoming economic indicators, including the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting minutes and U.S. jobless claims data, are expected to influence market sentiment in the coming days.
