Stripe to Launch Stablecoin Cards in Over 100 Countries by Year-End
TLDR
- Stripe aims to roll out stablecoin-powered card programs across more than 100 nations before 2026 ends.
- Privy co-founder Henri Stern now directs Stripe’s entire stablecoin and cryptocurrency operations.
- Monthly stablecoin card transaction volume reached approximately $1.2 billion, representing a threefold year-over-year increase.
- Notable card program partners include cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, fintech platform Ramp, and payment application Morse.
- While exploring tokenized deposits and decentralized finance capabilities, Stripe’s primary emphasis remains on stablecoin infrastructure.
The payment processing giant Stripe is dramatically scaling its stablecoin-backed card offerings worldwide. In a statement to CoinDesk, the company confirmed its stablecoin card initiatives will be available in upwards of 100 countries before the year concludes.
Steering this ambitious expansion is Henri Stern. The entrepreneur co-created Privy, a cryptocurrency wallet infrastructure provider acquired by Stripe in the previous year. Stern currently manages stablecoin strategy and broader crypto initiatives throughout Stripe’s entire operation.
The company has already established partnerships with multiple firms utilizing its stablecoin card technology. Partners encompass cryptocurrency trading platform Kraken, financial technology provider Ramp, and digital payment service Morse.
Stablecoin Card Spending Is Growing Fast
Stablecoin-linked cards represent an increasingly significant component of the digital dollar ecosystem, which currently exceeds $300 billion in total value. According to Paymentscan analytics, stablecoin expenditures through card networks totaled roughly $1.2 billion during the most recent month.
This figure marks a tripling compared to the same period twelve months prior. Nevertheless, it constitutes only a fraction of worldwide card payment activity.
The upward trajectory demonstrates that stablecoins serve purposes beyond cryptocurrency speculation. An expanding user base now employs them for routine transactions and international remittances.
Stripe’s strategy involves integrating stablecoins with its existing infrastructure. Since 2018, the payment processor has generated over 400 million cards while handling hundreds of billions of dollars in card-based transactions.
The company merges this card infrastructure with Bridge, a stablecoin technology provider it acquired for $1.1 billion during 2024. For businesses like Ramp, this framework could enable corporate card deployment across multiple territories without establishing individual banking relationships in each jurisdiction.
Kraken has similarly explored enabling customers to make purchases directly from accounts holding cryptocurrency assets.
Stripe Is Building a Wider Crypto Payments Network
Stripe has executed multiple strategic initiatives supporting this vision. Following the Bridge and Privy acquisitions, the company collaborated with cryptocurrency investment firm Paradigm to develop Tempo, a blockchain network optimized for payment processing.
Additionally, Stripe serves as a founding backer of Open Standard. This venture is creating Open USD, a stablecoin designed to challenge established players Circle’s USDC and Tether’s USDT.
Zach Abrams, who helped establish Bridge, recently transitioned to managing Open Standard on a full-time basis.
Stern explained these offerings are engineered for interoperability without locking users into proprietary ecosystems. He emphasized that individuals utilizing Stripe, Bridge, Privy, Tempo, and Open USD should experience seamless integration across platforms.
Many of Stripe’s existing card programs currently operate on Circle’s USDC infrastructure. However, Stern stressed Stripe’s commitment to maintaining compatibility with diverse stablecoins and blockchain networks.
He noted Stripe must accommodate both cryptocurrency-native users and the millions conducting business in traditional currencies through Stripe’s platform. Stern highlighted that cryptocurrency’s fundamental advantage stems from its permissionless architecture, and Stripe intends to preserve user flexibility in selecting preferred tools.
Beyond card services, Stripe is investigating tokenized bank deposits and decentralized finance applications. The company is simultaneously evaluating acceptance of additional digital asset categories for payment processing.
Nonetheless, Stern clarified that Stripe’s immediate priorities center on stablecoin development. The international card expansion targeting over 100 countries represents the organization’s principal objective for the current year.
