Prime Video Secures Exclusive Emmy Awards Broadcasting Rights Through 2032

      TLDR

      • Prime Video has secured a six-year exclusive contract to host the Emmy Awards globally beginning in 2027.
      • The traditional rotation system among ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC will end after this year’s broadcast.
      • Viewers worldwide can watch the ceremony at no cost, with no Prime membership necessary.
      • The previous annual licensing fee was approximately $9.5 million, though new terms remain undisclosed.
      • Amazon aims to revitalize the show’s presentation and appeal to a younger demographic.

Prime Video has secured an exclusive six-year partnership with the Television Academy to become the sole global broadcaster of the Emmy Awards. The announcement came Tuesday from both organizations.

The partnership begins with the 2027 broadcast. It marks the conclusion of the decades-old “Wheel Deal” system, which cycled broadcasting duties annually among the four major networks: ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC.

This year’s Emmy telecast represents the final installment under the rotating arrangement. Beginning in 2027, Prime Video will serve as the exclusive home for six consecutive annual ceremonies.

      Free Access Despite Platform Shift

While transitioning to a digital platform, Amazon has committed to maintaining free access to the broadcast. No Prime membership will be required for viewing.

The traditional September live broadcast timing will also remain unchanged, preserving the ceremony’s established position in the television calendar.

Neither party revealed the financial details of the arrangement. According to the Television Academy’s latest public filings, the previous annual licensing agreement was worth roughly $9.5 million.

Production expenses for the event are covered separately by the rights holder. This funding structure is anticipated to continue under Amazon’s stewardship.

For a corporation with Amazon’s resources, the licensing fee represents a modest investment. The strategic benefit comes from leveraging a high-profile live broadcast to expand Prime Video’s audience reach.

However, challenges exist. This year’s Emmy telecast averaged 6.7 million viewers, representing a 10% decline compared to the previous year’s audience.

The ratings did show improvement from a historic low recorded two years ago, suggesting some stabilization in viewer engagement.

      Format Overhaul Planned

Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video, stated that Amazon intends to attract a younger audience. The company also plans to reimagine the ceremony’s presentation style.

Concrete details about format modifications have not been announced. Further announcements are anticipated as the 2027 broadcast date approaches.

The Emmy Awards launched in 1949. The program honors excellence in television performance, writing and behind-the-scenes work.

For decades, the ceremony has functioned as a cornerstone promotional platform for the U.S. television industry.

Legacy broadcast networks have encountered intensifying competition from digital platforms in recent years. Audiences increasingly turn to streaming services for live programming and awards ceremonies.

Amazon’s move follows a similar trend. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced last year that the Oscars will transition from ABC to YouTube for live streaming beginning in 2029.

This Emmy partnership strengthens Prime Video’s portfolio of live content. The platform has progressively expanded into original programming, theatrical releases, sports coverage and strategic streaming collaborations.

Amazon now has until the 2027 ceremony to develop its reimagined format and determine whether a streaming environment can help restore declining Emmy viewership numbers.
