Kansas City Fed President Emphasizes Inflation Focus Amid Stable Labor Market

Jeffrey Schmid, president of the Kansas City Federal Reserve, has reiterated the importance of addressing inflation while acknowledging the current stability of the labor market. Speaking at a recent panel alongside Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin and Boston Fed President Susan Collins, Schmid supported the Federal Reserve's decision to raise interest rates in September, emphasizing that inflation remains a top priority for the central bank.

Schmid noted that the economy is broadly stable, which provides the Federal Reserve with the necessary leeway to concentrate on restoring price stability. He highlighted that while the labor force is in a favorable position, there is still significant work to be done to meet the inflation targets outlined in the Fed's mandate. The impact of higher borrowing costs on housing and commercial credit was also discussed, indicating a tightening of financial conditions due to increased market rates.

While Schmid's comments reflect a hawkish stance on inflation, they do not signal a commitment to another interest rate hike in October. The ongoing focus on inflation underscores the Fed's credibility in managing economic stability and its dual mandate of promoting maximum employment and stable prices.
