Saudi Aramco Lowers Arab Light Crude Price for Asia to Six-Year Low

Saudi Aramco has reduced the price of its Arab Light crude for Asian buyers by $3 per barrel, setting it at $5 below the Oman/Dubai benchmark average. This marks the widest discount since June 2020 and comes as Middle Eastern crude exports recover to nearly pre-war levels. The unexpected cut signals Aramco's strategy to prioritize market share over pricing, as traders had anticipated a price increase of $3 to $5.

In addition to the cut for Arab Light, Aramco also lowered prices for heavier grades, Arab Medium and Arab Heavy, by $5 each. Meanwhile, prices for Europe and the Mediterranean rose by $3 following the resumption of exports from the Yanbu port. The price adjustments reflect the changing dynamics of the oil market, particularly the risks associated with transporting crude through the Strait of Hormuz, which has led some buyers to avoid this route.

The decision to lower prices for Asia while increasing them for Europe indicates that Aramco is compensating Asian buyers for the higher freight and security risks they face. As Middle East crude exports reach approximately 98% of pre-war levels, the adjustments in pricing are seen as a response to both supply conditions and competitive pressures in the global oil market.
