U.S. Consumer Spending Rises Amid Cooling Core Inflation

In August 2026, inflation-adjusted consumer spending in the United States increased by 0.6%, marking the most significant monthly rise since March 2025. This surge in consumer activity reflects robust demand, indicating a resilient economy despite broader economic challenges.

Simultaneously, the Federal Reserve's preferred measure of inflation, the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index, rose by 0.3% month-over-month. Notably, core PCE, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, saw a more modest increase of just 0.2%.

The combination of strong consumer spending and easing inflation presents a complex scenario for the Federal Reserve as it approaches its next policy meeting in October. The central bank faces the challenge of determining whether to implement another interest rate hike in response to these mixed economic signals.
