a16z's AI Investments Surpass $8 Billion Following Recent Acquisitions

a16z's AI infrastructure team has achieved significant milestones with two recent acquisitions, resulting in a combined equity value exceeding $8 billion. SpaceX has acquired Cursor, a company in which a16z holds a 10% stake, valued at approximately $6 billion based on the acquisition price of $60 billion. Additionally, Stripe has announced its acquisition of OpenRouter, further contributing to a16z's impressive portfolio.

In 2024, a16z participated in Cursor's $60 million Series A funding round when the company's valuation was only $400 million. The rapid increase in Cursor's value highlights the growing interest and investment in AI technologies. The Information reports that the two transactions involving Cursor and OpenRouter are sufficient for a16z's infrastructure-focused fund to return all principal to limited partners and generate additional profits.

a16z established its first $1.25 billion infrastructure fund in 2024 and has since raised an additional $1.7 billion for the same fund, along with $1.1 billion specifically for AI hardware. Martin Casado, head of AI infrastructure, noted a significant shift in the startup landscape, with the percentage of hardware-focused projects increasing from 5% to 20% in recent years.
