alloc init Launches Shielded Bitcoin Metaprotocol for Enhanced Privacy
New York-based cryptography firm alloc init has announced the launch of its 'Shielded Bitcoin' metaprotocol, which aims to provide Zcash-level transaction privacy on Bitcoin's base layer without requiring any modifications to Bitcoin's consensus code. This innovative system utilizes witness encryption, allowing for private transfers that appear as standard Schnorr signature transactions on the Bitcoin blockchain.
The technical framework behind Shielded Bitcoin is known as Bitcoin PIPEs v2, which was detailed in a research paper published on February 5, 2026. This framework employs an Arithmetic Affine Determinant Program (AADP)-based witness encryption scheme, enabling the verification of complex transaction conditions without revealing sensitive data. Misha Komarov, founder and CEO of alloc init, emphasized that the programmability of this system is rooted in cryptography rather than Bitcoin's scripting language.
While the design mirrors Zcash’s shielded pool architecture, alloc init's approach seeks to retain Bitcoin's established network effects and security. However, the implementation currently requires approximately 330 terabytes of storage, significantly more than the 600 gigabytes needed for a typical Bitcoin full node. The team aims to reduce this storage requirement to around 100 gigabytes, although this optimization has yet to be realized.
The introduction of Shielded Bitcoin comes at a time when existing privacy tools for Bitcoin face increasing scrutiny, particularly following legal challenges faced by privacy wallet providers. As the demand for private transactions grows, alloc init's proposal represents a significant development in the ongoing evolution of Bitcoin's privacy landscape.
