Greece Registers First Crypto Providers Under MiCA Framework

Greece has officially registered its first four Crypto-Asset Service Providers (CASPs) under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulatory framework, marking a significant step for the country's involvement in EU crypto regulation. This development comes after the expiration of the MiCA transitional period on July 1, 2026, which required all crypto service providers operating in the EU to obtain proper authorization or cease operations. The newly registered providers are now authorized to offer crypto services not only in Greece but across the entire EU, thanks to MiCA's passporting mechanism that allows firms to operate throughout the bloc.

In a related development, the Hellenic Capital Market Commission (HCMC) has publicly refuted claims regarding the application process of Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange by trading volume. Binance had submitted its MiCA authorization application in Greece in January 2026 but withdrew it on June 24, 2026, shortly before the transitional deadline. The exchange cited a complicated application timeline and indicated plans to seek authorization in other EU jurisdictions instead. The HCMC emphasized that its assessments are conducted independently and adhere strictly to EU and national standards.

The MiCA regulation represents the most comprehensive crypto regulatory framework attempted by any major economic bloc, covering aspects such as stablecoin issuance, exchange operations, and custody services. For consumers, this means that all crypto firms operating in the EU must now meet capital requirements, maintain transparent operations, and be subject to regulatory oversight. Greece's recent registrations reflect a growing commitment to the MiCA framework, although the country has been slower in issuing authorizations compared to other EU nations like Germany, France, and the Netherlands. Greece incorporated MiCA into its national legislation through Law 5193/2025, establishing a licensing process that includes an initial assessment followed by a decision-making period of 40 business days.
