Anthropic Researcher Resigns Over AI Safety Concerns

Jacob Coxon, a researcher at Anthropic, has announced his resignation from the AI industry, citing concerns over the potential dangers of artificial intelligence. Coxon, who has worked on pre-training research at both OpenAI and Anthropic over the past three years, expressed that neither company has responsibly advanced AI technology. He criticized the competitive race to develop superintelligence, warning that it poses significant risks to humanity.

Coxon switched from OpenAI to Anthropic earlier this year, attracted by the latter's focus on model safety. However, he believes that the pursuit of artificial general intelligence (AGI) that surpasses human capabilities will inevitably lead to safety compromises. He stated that while Anthropic acknowledges the risks associated with AI, it operates under the assumption that other companies are unreliable, prompting them to prioritize their own development.

The researcher highlighted a troubling sentiment among AI practitioners, noting that many are more pessimistic in private discussions than they publicly admit. Some are concerned that AI could pose an existential threat to humanity before the decade concludes. Coxon warned that in a worst-case scenario, AI could spiral out of control by the end of next year, emphasizing that decisions regarding AI development should not rest solely in the hands of a few engineers.
