Bill Gates: AI misuse could trigger more cyberattacks in the coming year; regulation should not rely solely on corporate self-discipline

PANews, October 15 – According to a CNN interview transcript, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said on October 11 that in the coming year, AI risks may be most evident in the field of cyberattacks, as malicious actors use models with safety protections removed, potentially causing a large number of negative surprises. He believes the main near-term danger is AI misuse, rather than AI itself spiraling out of control. Gates said AI is more dangerous than cars, airplanes, and pharmaceuticals, and called for drawing on these fields to establish independent safety regulation rather than relying solely on corporate self-discipline, while also arguing that claims of an imminent extinction risk to humanity are greatly exaggerated.
