BlackRock Clients Purchase $108 Million in Bitcoin Through IBIT Amid Strong Institutional Demand
BlackRock clients have acquired $108.44 million worth of Bitcoin in a single transaction through the firm's iShares Bitcoin Trust, known as IBIT. This purchase is part of a consistent trend for the fund, which has been attracting daily inflows ranging from $80 million to over $200 million since its launch in January 2024.
IBIT has emerged as the leading player in the U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF market, capturing between 50% and 80% of total daily or weekly inflows across competing products. In contrast, Grayscale's GBTC has faced persistent outflows as investors shift towards lower-fee alternatives. IBIT's holdings have reached between 770,000 and 786,000 BTC, positioning BlackRock as one of the largest institutional holders of Bitcoin, although the firm does not hold any Bitcoin on its balance sheet and only transacts at the request of clients.
In a significant move earlier this year, BlackRock reduced the minimum threshold for in-kind conversions from $25 million to $1 million. This change allows investors who hold Bitcoin directly to swap their coins for IBIT shares at a lower entry point, broadening participation to family offices, smaller registered investment advisors, and high-net-worth individuals. Cumulative in-kind conversions have surpassed $5 billion, indicating a strong migration into the regulated ETF structure for various reasons, including cleaner tax reporting and easier custody.
