Canada's Major Banks Launch Tokenized Deposit System for Faster Payments

Canada's six largest banks have announced a collaborative initiative to develop a tokenized deposit system aimed at enhancing the speed of interbank transfers. On September 22, the Bank of Montreal, CIBC, National Bank of Canada, Royal Bank of Canada, Scotiabank, and TD Bank Group revealed their plans to create a Canadian-dollar tokenized deposit infrastructure, marking a significant step for traditional finance into blockchain technology.

The initial phase of the project will focus on facilitating the efficient transfer of tokenized deposits among the six banks. The long-term goal is to achieve interoperability with digital asset initiatives and establish a programmable payment infrastructure that could transform interactions between Canadian businesses and consumers and their banks. Tokenized deposits will function as digital tokens on a distributed ledger, maintaining the characteristics of traditional bank deposits while enabling faster settlements and automated conditional payments.

The initiative received a boost from the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI), which clarified that tokenized deposits would not be classified as a separate asset class, thus removing regulatory uncertainties that had previously hindered banks from exploring this technology. This regulatory support, announced just 12 days prior to the banks' announcement, indicates a coordinated effort between the banks and regulators to advance this project.

Canada's approach is notable for its simultaneous involvement of all six major banks, a strategy that aims to avoid the common pitfalls seen in similar projects globally, where only a few institutions participate initially. By ensuring full participation from the outset, the initiative seeks to create a robust system for interbank transfers, setting Canada apart in the global landscape of financial innovation.
