Consensys Divides into Two Companies, Focusing on Institutional Blockchain and Consumer Wallets
Consensys Software Inc. announced on September 9, 2026, that it will split into two independent entities: MetaMask, a widely used consumer wallet, and a newly restructured Consensys focused on institutional blockchain infrastructure. This strategic separation aims to enhance the company's focus on tokenized finance and Layer 2 scaling solutions.
The new Consensys will center around Linea, a zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM) rollup that has gained traction since its mainnet launch in July 2023. Linea processes transactions off Ethereum’s main chain while maintaining its security, utilizing zero-knowledge proofs to verify transaction validity without revealing underlying data. The integration of Phylax’s Credible Layer in January 2026 has further strengthened Linea's security framework.
Joe Lubin, co-founder of Ethereum, will serve as Executive Chairman of MetaMask, while Mike Kriak has been appointed CEO of the new Consensys, with David Cunningham as President. Linea's involvement in blockchain messaging tests related to SWIFT, which connects over 11,000 financial institutions worldwide, has garnered interest from traditional finance sectors. Additionally, institutional yield strategies have begun deploying significant amounts of ETH on Linea, highlighting its growing relevance in corporate treasury activities.
