DeFi Lending Total Value Locked Reaches $50.2 Billion with 21% Growth

As of September 8, 2026, the total value locked (TVL) in decentralized finance (DeFi) lending protocols has surpassed $50.2 billion, reflecting a significant 21% increase over the past month, according to data from CertiK Skynet. This growth indicates a robust interest in DeFi lending, which has now reached a scale comparable to that of mid-sized traditional asset managers.

Prominent protocols such as Aave, Morpho, Spark, and Maple Finance are leading the market, with Aave consistently ranking high in CertiK's security-weighted metrics. These metrics assess not only the volume of assets but also the reliability of the protocols, incorporating audit data and exploit history to provide a comprehensive risk profile.

The recent surge in TVL can be attributed to rising collateral values in major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, which allow borrowers to secure larger loans without additional deposits. This trend appears to be driven by both new participants entering the market and the mechanical expansion of existing positions. Additionally, the presence of institutional-grade capital, particularly through Maple Finance, indicates a maturing landscape in DeFi lending, where structured credit products are being offered alongside traditional over-collateralized loans.
