Ethereum Releases Prysm Update Ahead of Glamsterdam Testnet Upgrade
Ethereum developers have launched version 7.2.1 of the Prysm client, which includes a significant increase in the Gas limit to 200 million. This update is part of preparations for the Glamsterdam upgrade, set to be tested on the Sepolia testnet. The upgrade is scheduled for activation on October 6, 2026, at 13:53:36 UTC, allowing developers to experiment with changes using tokens that hold no real value.
The testing will involve raising the Gas limit on the Sepolia testnet from approximately 60 million to 200 million. Gas measures the computational work a single block can handle on the Ethereum network. A higher Gas limit enables the network to process more transactions and complex activities simultaneously, but it also increases the demands on the computers that run Ethereum. Validators using the latest Prysm version will automatically propose blocks with the new limit, while those on the previous version will continue to operate under the old limit unless they adjust their settings manually.
The 200 million Gas limit is specific to the Sepolia testnet and does not yet apply to the Ethereum mainnet. This incremental increase in block capacity is part of Ethereum's ongoing efforts to assess the limits of its network before validators face excessive demands or costs. The Glamsterdam upgrade represents a crucial step in Ethereum's evolution as it seeks to enhance its scalability and efficiency.
